COLLEGE-ADMITTED BLACK MALE STUDENT-ATHLETES FROM LOW AND MIDDLE-INCOME FAMILIES GET LEFT BEHIND
“The most troubling statistic in our study is the continuing large disparity between the graduation success rates of White student-athletes and African-American student-athletes.
— Richard Lapchick, Director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports
Our goal is to dramatically increase the number of low and middle-income Black male students who enter and legitimately graduate college through a cost and programmatically effective strategy to attract, retain, inspire, motivate and support athletes, particularly Black male student-athletes from public high schools to admission to college and through college graduation.
Today, more than ever, we must tap talent from every sector of society. Thousands of college-admitted Black male student-athletes are not earning a degree because they lack the academic support, information, guidance and mentorship needed to persist to college graduation.
When you support the National Sports Authority, you are helping us develop an untapped pool of college-admitted talent that is crucial to addressing the issues that led to the creation of the “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative by President Obama to create opportunities for boys and young men of color. America cannot remain globally competitive and upwardly mobile when so many lost college opportunities are concentrated among Black male student-athletes from low- and middle-income families. Families in these income groups make up 75% of the American population.
